For our latest Family Movie Night, it was my turn to pick the movie and I decided that it was time to introduce the kids to “Herbie” in his first movie venture, The Love Bug. I remember loving those movies as a kid and my family even had a yellow Volkswagen Beetle that we affectionately named “Herbie.” I always wanted to ride in him—especially in the “way back”! How on earth did I ever fit back there?
If you haven’t heard of Herbie or his movie franchise, he is a lovable car with a mind of his own. He is driven by Jim and together they become a racing sensation. There is of course a villain, Peter, who tries to prevent Herbie from winning.
Well, my movie selection was a huge success. Z-man was so inspired that he pretended to be a car racing around the carpet during the races and Lyds said that she loved it. Hubby thought it was fun—he actually stayed awake. And I enjoyed it too, but I wouldn’t recommend it for more than anything but family movie night…translation…if you are not looking for a movie to watch with kids then skip it.
Three interesting tidbits about the movie:
- The Love Bug was the 2nd highest grossing film of 1969. It made the Volkswagen Beetle popular again and led to four sequels along with a remake in 2005.
- It was the last live action Disney movie produced under Walt Disney’s involvement. Dean Jones (plays Jim) brought Walt a story about the first sports car ever brought to the US and Walt suggested a better story for the basis of The Love Bug—Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford.
- Disney actually had a casting call for a dozen cars before they picked the pearl white Volkswagen Beetle. They tested them by kicking the tires and teasing the steering wheels to see how they handled.
I think that this saga was successful enough to merit repetition and that we will try the other movies. Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, Herbie Goes Bananas, and Herbie: Fully Loaded. There was also a TV series as well as the Lindsay Lohan remake of Herbie: Fully Loaded.

I just watched the Lindsey Lohan remake on TV a couple of weeks ago. I'd almost totally forgotten about Herbie but I was glad to be reminded of this funny character. A VW Bug really does 'play' the roll well.
I loved "The Love Bug". Herbie was awesome!
I just realized you might be interested in this (now that it's over), but have you ever heard of Script Frenzy?
I have never heard of Script Frenzy, but am intrigued. I did a quick google and it sounds like it is wrapping up. Have you participated? I would love to hear more!
I did participate, and won this year. YAY! It was fun.
I'm more into the mother contest, National Novel Writing Month, but Script Frenzy was a challenge to help me grow. I'm not sure it did... but it did allow he to collaborate with a friend.
So, yeah. It is annual, so keep it in mind for next year.
You won! Huge WOW and congratulations! Is your entry posted on your website? Can I read it there...or on your live journal?
I've seen some of your novel entries...that seems daunting to me. Is this your first? What is the best way to read you?
Oh, no. I'm not posting that! It's really... not good. really.
The best way to read... hm. I don't know. I could send you some of the novels I did. They're first drafts, so pretty bad, and with holes in them, but still readable.
I don't post them because I hope to get them (someday) published. The rest of what you'll see on my lj and my website is Fanfiction. Which may not be that fun to read if you don't know the people. But...
Some of my best work is on the website: Eclipse, and the Visions of the Past, Memories of the Future trilogy: Problem Child and Long Road Home (I'm still working on the third, Haunted). I'd start there.
I don't know if you saw Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, but i have a bunch based there.
And I'll stop rambling at you now.
