GLEE Season Finale is a Fabulous JOURNEY!

I was planning to blog about the Rachel Weisz film Agora, but I cannot make myself do it because the Glee season finale will not be put aside…I must blog Glee!
What a perfect ending to a remarkable first season.  I fell in love with Glee when I first saw the pilot spring of 2009.  I thought that the first half of the Glee season was strong and I loved the story development and the song choices, but I felt that this second half of the season faltered.
It seemed that instead of focusing on the story, the writers tried to build episodes around a marketable gimmick, ie. do a show with a Madonna theme or a Lady Gaga theme and manipulate a story around song choices.   The numbers seemed too polished and they lacked heart because they were just numbers…I thought the Madonna episode was dreadful.
But tonight’s season finale was all about the story and the writers tied up every little story thread.  Simply beautiful!  Of course, New Directions performed at regionals--a Journey medley that was fabulous.  Quinn had her baby.  Finn told Rachel that he loved her. Mr. Shuster told Emma that he loved her.  New Directions lost at regionals to their rival Vocal Adrenaline, who sang an amazing medley of Bohemian Rhapsody.  Because of their loss, Principal Figgins canceled Glee Club.  But, Sue Sylvester had a change of heart and blackmailed Figgins into allowing Glee Club to exist for one more year.  Hallelujah!  Of course someone had to save the Glee Club.  The show ended with a rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow from Mr. Shuster.  What a perfectly magical ending to a magical season finale.
If for some reason you missed this series, it is going to repeat this summer on Thursdays.
Did you recognize the song that Glee sang, To Sir With Love?  That is the theme song from one of my favorite Sidney Poitier movies called To Sir With Love.  If you have never seen the movie, it is about a black man (Sidney Poitier) who cannot get a job as an engineer and so takes a position as a teacher in a rough all-white high school in East End London.  His unique way of teaching helps them to learn self-respect and of course they and he are changed.  Ahhh…Sidney.  Always charming and classy.
